Mobile Game for Kids
THE CHALLENGE:
Create a mobile game to entertain and educate younger hemophilia patients (age 12-25) about Advate
THE SOLUTION:
Infusing a hemophilia drug can take up to an hour for each dose. We wanted to use this as an opportunity to teach gamer age patients about their drug in a subtle while, while providing entertainment to pass the time.
Eco-Trek is an outdoor based adventure game for iOS and Android devices. The game features three challenges - navigating a maze to your campsite, rockclimbing, and campsite management. All three consist of 10 progressively harder levels. Players could track their standing against a global leader board that was hosted on the Advate web site.
CONCEPT DESIGN:
The game was concepted and designed in house, and developed by a 3rd party vendor. My role was concept design - overall art direction for characters, game artifacts, cut scene concepts, game iconography - which was then exectuted in final art by the vendor. I also designed the leader board landing page and helped provide Beta testing with gameplay of progressive build while providing weekly feedback to the vendor as the game progressed in development.
GAME PLAY:
The game play within Eco-Trek is simple enough to be played by younger kids, but the level get challenging enough to keep older players engaged. The video below shows a sample of gameplay across all three mini games.
The first game is called "Bushwhacked!" and requires the user to navigate their backpack through a maze to their campsite. Various obstacles such as thornbushes, water, and animals can slow you up and cause you to lose items from your pack, costing you points. The user rolls the backpack through the maze by tilting their phone, taking advantage of the gyroscope in the phone to make the pack roll around the maze.
The second game is a rock climgbing game called "Alpine Summit". The goal is to get Cody (our main character) up to the top of the mountain as quickly as possible. Be careful though - birds and bats will try to slow you up and cost you time. The gameplay in this game uses colored hand holds on the rock face - the more moves you can string together using the same color hand holds, the more points you will score.
The third game is called "Roughin' It" and is a task based game. The player needs to have Cody complete a number of tasks to get his campsite ready in a certain amount of time. Problem solving and time management are key in this game, as Cody completes tasks such as chopping firewood, starting a campfire, or fishing for food.
Total time from initial concepting to launch was 13 months (there was some significant delays thanks to legal). This certainly was one of the most fun projects that I have ever been a part of.
This project was completed while working at Intouch Solutions.
