The Challenge:
Persevere through 108 years of futility to track every single W needed to finally capture the World Series title
The Solution:
I’ve been a Cubs fan my whole life, but my grandfather had a 53 year head-start on me and has been a die-hard for all of his 94 years. He had been waiting since 1945 to see the Cubs make it back to the World Series, let alone do the unthinkable and win it all.
He took me to my first game in 1983. Together, we’ve watched the precious few playoff series there have been since then, always with hope, always ending with "Wait ‘til next year…". All I wanted was the chance to watch a Cubs World Series with him, and hopefully, just hopefully, see them win it all.
The high expectations of 2016 caused me to optimistically start tracking W's to remember what I believed was my last chance to watch that World Series with him. From Game 1 of the regular season, until the final out of W 114 in November, I captured each W on Instagram and Facebook and saw it get the Happily Ever After ending.
Along the way, I got to watch a number of playoff games with my grandfather, sharing 3 World Series games, including the magical Game 7.
My only rules for this project was to post a W as soon as possible after it happened, as long as it was before the next game started. This started off as a photogrpahy project, but it increasingly morphed into sketches as the playoffs neared. The sketches were mostly done on my daily train ride to work in order to keep them as spontaneous as possible.
